SUMMARY
Lexia Reading System is a program designed to help students acquire and improve basic reading skills. It comprises various activities that concentrate on the phonological structure of language. These activities provide graduated practice in phonic decoding skills, comprehension, and keyboard skills.

This package has four levels and each level contains five different activities. The degree of difficulty increases as the student moves up through the four levels. Students control which activities they use within the levels.

Lexia features automatic branching where students can move forward on to a more difficult level when they have successfully attained a number of correct answers in previous activities. This provides practice in areas that the student is having difficulty with. It also allows more able students to access more challenging units.

Lexia is content-rich software and this can allow the student to work independently in class. I evaluated this piece of software with two third year students; one with dyslexia and the other with a Mild General Learning Disability. Lexia is ideally suited to Special Educational Needs students and for anyone who has difficulties with literacy. I used Lexia as part of the Laptops Initiative for students with dyslexia and/or reading writing difficulties. The repetitive nature of this program will allow students to practice sounds and words that they have difficulty coping with.
