Winzip is probably the best known file extractor and compression utility. It is Proprietary software although there is a free demo version available. It will open most archive file formats including zip, tar, gz, RAR and cab.

For new users, it has a wizard process to help to compress or extract your file. Experienced users might prefer the classic view where it is as easy to drag and drop the files or documents to be processed.

WinACE

WinACE is a very popular utility especially in Europe. Like Winzip it supports a number of different formats; zip, tat, gz, RAR and ACE. ACE as a format that is not as popular as the zip format but it generally offers higher compression. It also has a useful function in that it allows you to view files like html, image files without having to extract them and view them in an seperate application. 

To new users, it is similar to the Classic version of winzip. There is a shareware version that is free but it comes with embedded ads within the software.

WinRAR/RAR

WinRAR/RAR are similar to the other compression utilities described above. It opens more file formats than the other utilities zip, tat, gz, RAR, ACE and cab files. WinRAR is extremely useful when zipping multimedia files.

Like winzip, it has wizard option for notice users, although it is not the default option. to access this option you will need to click the wizard button on the Menu bar
