RATHCORMAC NS - ANALYSIS OF CURRENT
ROAD SAFETY SITUATION

WHAT’S WORKING….WHAT ARE OUR STRENGTHS ?

ü Road markings: car parking spaces, bus pull-in, white line drop-off bays, yellow box grid, childrens’ walkway.
ü Warning signage within vicinity of school.
ü Good system for bus parking…parallel to school, doors facing
inwards.
ü Bus drivers supervising bus queues successfully.
ü Children observing bus rules…No advancement until called.
ü Availability of Church car park.
ü 9am, 2pm traffic movement is not a problem.

WHAT’S NOT WORKING ?

Ø Some children crossing front road area unescorted.
Ø Lorries, fast cars driving through slip road.
Ø Haphazard parking by some parents (in yellow box, on edge of main
road, outside of/parallel to parked buses etc.) creates risks and
inconvenience for children and other drivers.
Ø Cars reversing out from school-facing position pose significant risks to children running behind.
Ø Regular 3pm parking chaos.

WHAT WOULD HELP ?

ü Build on (3/2007) RSA safety programme delivered to children.
ü Build on contacts with key safety authorities.
ü Brief parents also on road safety awareness.
ü Need for some parents to change parking habits.
ü With parents’ support and co-operation, aim to agree final, long-
term safety solution now. Build in arrangements for volunteer
marshalling of any new arrangements to ensure that no lapse
occurs.
ü NOTE: It is possible, with the co-operation and tolerance of all of the school community, to significantly reduce the risk of a serious injury or fatality outside Rathcormac NS.

WHAT WOULD HINDER OUR EFFORTS ?

Ø Some people may not co-operate with new parking arrangements.
Ø Safety measures will lapse in time if not marshalled.
