CONCESSIONARY SCHOOL BUS TICKETS
Did you know that Bus Éireann operates a concessionary ticket scheme on its school transport services to Rathcormac National School. ?
WHO IS ELIGIBLE ?
Concessionary tickets are generally issued on the following basis:
Where spare seats are available on special school services after all children, eligible for free transport, have been accommodated, fare-paying facilities (at a cost of Euro 26 per ticket, per term) may be granted……
§ To children who are ineligible for free transport on distance grounds, to enable them to travel on the special services which operate to their nearest suitable school, as determined by the Department of Education and Science.
§ To children who are eligible for free transport to their nearest school, but for whom there is no transport service available to that school, to enable them to travel on special school transport services to their next nearest school.
§ Where transport is sought on behalf of basically eligible children, to a school other than the nearest school or appropriate school of amalgamation, the granting of transport may be considered only if documentary evidence of the agreement of the authorities of the nearest school or of the school of amalgamation, as appropriate, is submitted to the Department of Education and Science.
The concessionary ticket lasts for one term only, but may be renewed from term to term on a first-come-first-served basis.
HOW DOES THE APPLICATION PROCESS WORK ?
Application for concessionary ticket(s), together with a payment of Euro 26 per ticket, must be made to Bus ÉIireann on the first day of each term (or as near as possible, thereafter), in respect of concessionary bus travel required for the subsequent school term. This application can be made by letter or by calling to the Bus Éireann main station (beside Sligo train station). The family identity number should be quoted.
Bus Éireann does not (re)process or hold previous failed applications, so if you have previously paid Euro 26, and have not succeeded in that application for concessionary ticket(s), you must re-apply to Bus Éireann and try again for a ticket for the next full school term.
NOTE: If (known to Bus Éireann only), after all concessionary tickets have been allocated, you are first on the residual list of applicants, this does not entitle you to remain first on that list for the subsequent term. You must formally re-notify your ongoing interest in a concessionary ticket(s) to Bus Éireann by again applying in writing.
Bus Éireann advises that typically, there is a queue of applicants from 7am-9am at the ‘window’ in the main bus station in Sligo on the first day of each new term. This is the earliest date that concessionary tickets for the subsequent school term can be applied for. Bus Éireann has advised that any letter applications received earlier than that date will be ‘returned to sender’, unprocessed.
If an individual family has more than one child who needs concessionary school transport for the subsequent term, if sufficient tickets are available when they are next in the queue, they will be allocated the number of tickets they require.
HOW CAN YOU HELP ?
If you are a parent whose child(ren) are eligible for free school transport to Rathcormac N.S., but who currently do not require the use of the school bus service, you can, without loss of your child(ren)’s school transport entitlement, donate your ticket(s) for concessionary re-issue.
You can do this by returning your ticket(s) under covering letter, directly to Bus Éireann, Sligo, or to the Bus Éireann Inspector.
Bus Éireann has assured us that parents who donate their child(ren)’s ticket in this way are entitled to have their ticket(s) returned from the first date of a subsequent (full) school term, onwards (..but not mid-term). They must write to Bus Éireann to request this and the request will be honoured, without quibble. Such notice of the need for return of the ticket(s) donated, for future term use, must be made approximately one month in advance of the first day of the new term.
