RATHCORMAC NS ROAD SAFETY WORKING GROUP
PRESENTATION TO PARENTS 21ST MARCH 2007
FEEDBACK FROM ATTENDEES:
Approx 25 parents in attendance
Group felt that there is certainly a safety issue outside the school entrance that poses a risk to children.
THE GROUP ENDORSED THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS:
· Explore 1-way systems to control school traffic flow
· Use of church car park welcomed but if to be compulsory in any new system, entrance pillars will have to be widened.
· Immediate action needed to direct parents not to park alongside buses or outside of cars on the teachers’ car park side.
· Safety-awareness programmes for parents and children.
· Involvement of Safety Authorities and Gardaí. Consult with Sgt John Conlon, now, on options for 1-way systems and public road issues.
· Provision of speed ramps outside school.
· Need for full co-operation of truck companies and all drivers.
· Investigate necessity for/feasibility of traffic calming measures on main road, if 1-way system introduced at school….Is there a danger that cars would back up turning right onto the main road up from Drum road crossroads ? Could this be alleviated by traffic calming structures ?
· Group supports the proposal for ‘marshalling’ of whatever traffic flow solution is introduced to ensure that the required behaviour change develops. One ‘marshall’ volunteered on the night !
· Main road access to school by bicycle is risky, coming from Sligo town side. Explore options for cycle lane/crossing.
